James M. Coates Sr., 86, of Girard, died at 9:15AM Monday April 11, 2016 at his residence with his family at his side. He was reunited on this day with his wife Velma which  would have been their 63rd wedding anniversary.

He was born February 5, 1930 in Niles the son of James and Isabelle Brutz Coates.

He was a 1949 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles, and a United States Army Veteran of The Korean War. He enjoyed spending time with his family and attending his children’s  and grandchildren’s sporting events. He spent most of his time working. He started McKinley 1-Minute Car Wash in 1959  which is now Coates Car Care Inc. He truly enjoyed talking with is customers.

He was one of the founders of The Mahoning Valley Chapter of The National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, which he was named Man of The Year in 2001. He was actively involved with The Oblate Sisters of The Sacred Heart, The Ohio Car Wash Association, The Private Industry Council, The Warren General Hospital Foundation, The Elks, and The Loyal Order of Moose.

His wife Velma D’Annunzio Coates whom he married April 11, 1953, died January 13, 2002.

He will be deeply missed by his children; his son James Coates Jr. and his wife Gina of Girard, five daughters, Roselyn Cera and her husband Robin, Isabelle Santisi, Angela Stabile and her husband Robert, Amy Limongi and her husband Richard all of Girard, and Jamie Williams of Niles, two brothers, Michael Coates of Niles and Marty Coates of Dayton, two sisters, Anna Mae Massullo of Brookfield and Marian Mitolo of Niles, and fifteen grandchildren, J.R. and Christopher Williams, Taylor Cera, Donald Livi, Lindsay Gatta, Jaclyn Gerba, Christina and Ann Marie Santisi, Kerryn, Chelsea, and Richard Limongi, and James, Angelene,  Jacob, and Chloe Coates.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter Linda Livi., and a sister Isabelle Marcovecchio.

Friends may call from 4 to 8PM Wednesday at The Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles where The Mount Carmel Bereavement Ministry will conduct prayers at 7:30PM.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10AM Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles preceded by a 9:30AM prayer service at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery where Jim will be honored for his military service by The Girard Veterans Council Honor Guard
