Lewis Carbone Obituary

Lewis F. Carbone of Niles, 97, died peacefully on Saturday afternoon, November 17, 2018, at Windsor House in Liberty following a struggle with declining health during the last five months.
Heaven is a bit more joyful today!

Lou was born to Ralph James and Frances Carbone on October 16, 1921 in Cosoleto, a small town in Reggio Calabria, Italy.  In 1926, at the age of 5 years, he traveled to America with his parents and older brother and sister.  It was a journey he remembered well, a story he told often, leaving his uncle and traveling across the ocean to new life in America.   The family settled in Hooversville, Pennsylvania where his four younger sisters were born.  It was there that he learned to speak English and proudly taught his 2nd grade teacher a little Italian!

In the late 1930's, the family moved to Warren, Ohio. Louie’s first job was setting pins in a bowling alley where he first learned about plumbing from the owner.  He worked as a chipper at Copperweld Steel before enlisting in the Navy in 1942.  He proudly served aboard the USS Cascade in WWII.  Upon completion of his enlistment in 1945, he reluctantly accepted an Honorable discharge, returning home to help his mother care for his young sisters due to the untimely death of their father.

Lou and Evelyn (Tisone) were married in 1953 and enjoyed 63 wonderful years until her death on January 25, 2016.  They made their home in Niles where they raised their three sons. Together, they worked to establish and operate Lou Carbone Plumbing for over 50 years.  Even after retirement, Lou continued to work in the shop and kept his eye on things until after his 90th birthday.

Lou was an active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Niles.  He served in leadership roles in the American Legion Post #106, the Niles Lions Club, and the Knights of Columbus Council #1601. He was very civic minded and generous in the community, as well, holding a seat on the Niles Board of Health for many years.

Lou was an avid golfer, an amazing dancer, a cautious card player and a great story teller. He enjoyed shopping at the auction and bringing home boxes full of things to give away. He loved to sing and recite to his grandchildren the songs and poetry that he learned as a child.

From 1980 until 2015, Evelyn and Lou spent winters in Florida where they had many wonderful friends and were an integral part of the community at The Courtyards of Cape Coral.

Lou is survived by his sons Lew Jr. (Kathy) of Norwalk, OH, Larry (Nancy) of Brookfield, OH, Lennie of Norton, OH, Susan Heatherington of Irwin, PA, who has been like a daughter to him, his grandchildren Takesha (Nicki) Cross-Carbone, Scott, Sarah and Callilah Carbone, Dana and Danielle Ackerman, Stephanie, Lauren and Megan Caswell, and Diana Trella, his kind and caring neighbor.

He is also survived by his sisters, Carmella Cerimele of Warrren, OH and Agnes Heard of Ft. Myers, FL, several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by brother, Jim Carbone, and sisters: Isabel Mundo, Josephine Ramos, Antionette Mancino.
