Fred Kubli Jr., 96 of Niles died at 6:55AM Monday May 9, 2016 at Shepherd of The Valley Lutheran Home in Howland.
He was born September 15, 1919 in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania the son of Fred and Mary Kubli
He was a 1938 graduate of Turtle Creek High School, a 1942 graduate of The University of Pittsburgh with a degree in metallurgy, and employed for 30 years as a metallurgist at RMI Titanium Company retiring in 1991.
He was a member of The Living Lord Lutheran Church of Howland and its council, The William McKinley American Legion Post 106 in Niles where he served as Commander, Vice-Commander, adjutant and chairman of Buckeye Boys State. He was a member of The Friends of The McKinley Memorial Library, The Niles Historical Society, and The committee to reconstruct The McKinley Birthplace House. He was also a member of The RMI Retirees, Niles Kiwanis Club, a Master Mason, Chairman of The Metropolitan Housing Board, Niles Civil Service Board, board member of Shepherd of The Valley, a Boy Scout Committee Man, and in November 2009 he was chosen to represent local veterans when he was asked to do the coin toss at a Cleveland Browns Monday Night Football Game shortly after Veterans Day. In 2010 Fred was named first honorary Wing Commander of The 910 Air Lift at Youngstown Airbase, in 2012 was also named an honorary General of The Youngstown Airbase, and founded The "Pilot for a Day" program at The Vienna Airbase
Fred also received several awards for service such as The Boys Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award, The Jaycees of America Carmen DeCristofaro Award, Niles Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen Award, and The Presidential Citation for Leadership
Fred was also a United States Army veteran of World War II having served with The 139'th Evacuation Hospital Unit where he was involved in the liberation of a concentration camp in Ebensee, Austria
He will be deeply missed by his wife Mary Laverne Shaw Kubli whom he married November 25, 1943, two sons, David Kubli and his wife Elaine of Columbus and Timothy Kubli and his wife Rosemary of Canfield, two daughters, Diane L. Marrara and her husband Anthony of Champion and Michele Kubli of Duarte, California, two sisters, Margaret Crow and her husband Cecil of San Rosa California, and Freda Polinski and her husband Joseph of North Huntington, Pennsylvania, eight grandchildren Gary Marrara and his wife Carrie, Joseph Marrara and his wife Monica, Heather Southerington and her husband Mike, Todd Kubli and his wife Lindsey, Alex Kubli, Eric Kubli, Tyler Morales, Lucinda Beach, and five great-grandchildren, Anthony Marrara, Madeline Marrara, Christopher Southerington, Braxton Kubli, and Giovanni Marrara.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Kubli, Arthur Kubli, and Ludwig Kubli, and a sister, Louise Laughery.
Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8PM at The Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles and from 9:30AM to 10:30AM Thursday at The Living Lord Lutheran Church in Howland.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30AM Thursday at The Living Lord Lutheran Church in Howland with Pastor Bill Leitch officiating.
Burial will be in Meadowbrook Cemetery where Fred will be honored for his military services.
