Frederick D. Cleary, 80, of Niles died Wednesday September 3, 2014 at Summa Akron City Hospital.
He was born March 25, 1934 in Youngstown the son of Paul William and Mary Vasco Cleary.
Fred was a 1952 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, a 1961 graduate of Youngstown College with a Bachelors Degree in Education, a 1968 graduate of Westminster College with a Masters Degree in Education, and attended Kent State University
He served two years in The United States Army from 1956 to 1958 as a Secret Clearance Clerk and also played basketball for the Post's Special Services Team.
Fred began his teaching career at Braceville High School and in 1962 coached the boys track team to the Ohio State Class A Championship. He was honored as the Ohio Track Coach of The Year. He was also Administrator of Student Affairs at Mahoning Valley Vocational School, Principal at Maplewood High School, Superintendent of Farmington Schools and in 1973 became superintendent of Fairhaven Schools retiring in May of 1991.
Fred also worked at Arby's International as Director of Training Procedures of running a fast food business to all franchises and their managers throughout the United States.
Fred served on numerous committees during his career. They included The North Central Evaluation Teams, The Ohio State Beta Club, the Governing Board of The North East Ohio Special Education Regional Resources Center, The Trumbull County PIC Council Board, member of The C.E.T.A, The Governing Board of The North East Ohio Special Education Regional Resources Center, The Ohio and Trumbull County Education Associations, The Trumbull County Coaches Association, The Trumbull County Superintendents Association, and The Buckeyes School Administrators Association. He also served on The Ohio Association of Superintendents of MR/DD Programs, Niles Frontliners, Niles Roundballers, Niles Alumni Association, YSU Alumni Association, YSU Penguin Club, YSU Varsity Club, Ohio Special Olympics, Trumbull County Association of Retired Teachers, Public Employees Retirement Association, and was former president of The Niles McKinley High School Alumni Association.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles, original member of The Mt. Carmel Parish Council, member and past director of The Niles Lions Club where he received The Melvin E. Jones Award for Outstanding Lions Member, member and past financial secretary of The Niles Knights of Columbus #1681.
Fred loved to cook and bake and enjoyed traveling to Florida with his wife and vacationing in Florida and Myrtle Beach with his sons Fred and Dan and their families. He also loved to go to his grandchildren's school plays, dance recitals, football, baseball, and soccer games.
He will be deeply missed by his wife Mary Ann Vecchione Cleary whom he married August 1, 1959, two sons Fred M. Cleary(DeeDee) of Stow, Ohio and Daniel J. Cleary(Colleen) of Concord, Ohio, six grandchildren, Stephen Cleary(Kendall), Shannon Cleary, Marissa Cleary, Matthew Cleary, Ashley Cleary, and Sydney Cleary, a sister Ann Pustay of Florida, a brother-in-law Sal Vecchione(Dorothy) of Youngstown, a sister-in-law, Sr. Adele Vecchione A.S.C. of Warren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Mary Louise Harchar, and his father-in- law and mother- in- law, Dan and Adelma Vecchione
Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 6PM at The Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home where The Mount Carmel Bereavement Ministry will conduct prayers at 5:30PM.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10AM Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles preceded by a 9:30AM prayer service at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery where Fred will be honored for his military service by The Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard.
Arrangements are being handled by The Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.
