Obituary

Louis Edward Pogoreltz, 88, of Niles, Ohio, formerly of Canonsburg, died Saturday, November 6, 2010 in Niles under the compassionate care of caregivers Debbie, Melania, Mary, Cheryl and Angel.

He was born in Canonsburg May 23, 1922, a son of Frank and Mary Baric Pogoreltz.

Mr. Pogoreltz served with the United States Army during World War Two as a machine gunner and fought in the Normandy Invasion. He was awarded the European Campaign Medal with four bronze stars and the Good Conduct medal.

Lou was a skilled cabinet maker and founding partner of General Wood crafting in Canonsburg.

On March 25, 1942 in Winchester, Virginia, he married Rose Rubis Pogoreltz who survives. Also surviving are one son, Louis H. Pogoreltz (Kathleen) of Washington; one daughter, Linda L. Snedeker (Robert) of Niles, Ohio; two sisters, Frances Baker of Melbourne, Florida and Emily Fradette of Satellite Beach, Florida; three grandchildren, Louis J. Pogoreltz (Renee) Jody Mullen, and Robert L. Snedeker (Carrie); three great-grandchildren, Nicolas, Rosie and Sophia Snedeker and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the VFW Post 191 of Canonsburg, American Legion Post 902 of Houston, SNPJ and KSKJ Lodges of Strabane. He enjoyed golfing, shooting pool, playing euchre and traveling.

Deceased are four brothers, Ernest, Henry, Ludwig and Frank Retzel, and three sisters, Helen Kotar, Mary Retzel and Angeline Samsa.

Friends will be received from 3 to 8 pm Thursday at the Sollon Funeral Home, Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, Phillip L. Sollon, director, where services will be held on Friday at 9:30AM with Reverend Rick Bruckner officiating. Burial will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies with full military rites accorded by the combined honor guards of VFW Post 191 and American Legion Post 902 .
