Matilda Sacco

Matilda J. Sacco, 85, passed away at her residence on Friday, July 24, 2026.

She was born on October 10, 1940, in Warren to Joseph and Rose Dalessandro Bruno.

 Matilda was a lifelong resident of Niles and a 1958 graduate of Niles McKinley High School. She also attended Youngstown University.

On October 5, 1963, she married Jerry Sacco, with whom she shared four children, and worked for a short time in the Trumbull County Auditor’s Office. She was a lifelong member of Saint Pope John XXIII Parish-Mt. Carmel Church and volunteered in the Mt. Carmel School cafeteria.

A devoted daughter, niece, wife, and mother, Matilda worked dutifully to make her house a home. She prepared delicious meals and made sure her children could carry on family traditions. She was a caregiver to her parents and other family members when their health declined.

Unknown to most, she quietly served as a bench coach for the Cleveland Guardians at their satellite dugout in her living room. She also worked as an impromptu food critic who registered her disapproval with near legendary facial expressions.

Besides her parents and husband, Matilda is predeceased by two daughters, Gina Sacco and Jessica Sacco.

She leaves a daughter, Carmel Sacco, and a son, James Sacco, both of Niles; sisters- in-law, Eleanor Sacco of Boardman and Angie Sacco of Austintown; along with multiple cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, at Saint Pope John XXIII Parish-Mt. Carmel Church in Niles. Attendees are requested to gather at the church.

Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please refrain from eating garlic. For Matilda, that alone would make the world a better place.
