Nuzzi Sr
March 8, 1923 – June 13, 2014
The family of Paul A. Nuzzi, Sr. gives thanks to God for the gift of his long and happy life which came to an end on Friday, June 13, 2014 in the company of his children and extended family. Born March 8, 1923 in Niles, Paul was the son of Umberto and Philomena (Bernardino) Nuzzi, both of whom immigrated from Italy in the early 1900s. He attended Monroe Elementary School and graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 1941. Following a short employment at McDonald Carnegie-Illinois, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in November 1942, undergoing basic training at Parris Island and served at Fort Miflin, PA. He was promoted to corporal aboard the USS Hocking during WWII and served in Okinawa and Guadalcanal before being wounded in action. He returned home to Niles and was married on July 9, 1949 to Ann DePasquale, a marriage that would extend over sixty years. Paul worked his entire career in civilian defense for the federal government, holding various positions at the Ravenna Arsenal, the Parma Defense Depot, the Lordstown Ordnance Plant, and the Youngstown Air Base. In retirement, he enjoyed gardening and traveling, often spending the winter months in Florida. He was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and a much loved father, husband, grandfather, brother, and uncle.
He is survived by his three children, Carolyn (Dr. Michael) Mokris of Orlando, FL; Paul (Cathy) Nuzzi of Girard, OH; and the Rev. Ronald Nuzzi of Granger, IN. His six grandchildren brought much joy and pride into his life, and he delighted in sharing in all of the significant moments of their lives, from first communions and graduations to baptisms and weddings. His grandchildren are: Dr. Patrick (JoAnn) Mokris of Winter Park, FL; Mary Beth Mokris of Arlington, VA; Michael Paul Mokris of Trappist, KY; Anne (Michael) Schnaus of Edina, MN; Jennifer (Michael) Harris of Powell, OH; and Matthew (Jessica) Nuzzi also of Powell, OH. Four great-grandchildren were a special blessing and gave the family a four generation span in recent years, Patrick George, Jack, and Charlotte Mokris of Winter Park, FL and Kayla Harris of Powell, OH. Two more great-grandchildren are anxiously anticipated in the near future. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Rose DePasquale and Mary Ellen Nuzzi, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Ann, on April 11, 2011, and by his brothers, Michael Nuzzi, James (Jack) Nuzzi, Joseph Orleans, Al (Tony) Orleans; and his sisters, Dorothy (Sabella) Nuzzi and Genevieve Simeone.
