Philip Giangardella, 91, of Niles, died at 4:20PM Sunday August 4, 2013 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio surrounded by his family.
He was born February 1, 1922 in Gioiosa Marea, Italy the son of Samuel and Anna Agnello Giangardella.
Philip was employed for 40 years as a meat cutter and meat manager at Giant Eagle and Loblaws Grocery Store retiring in 1984, a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles, an accomplished wine and sausage maker, enjoyed Sunday spaghetti, gardening, reading, and avid mall walker.
He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II having served as a tank gunner in the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe and was awarded 3 bronze service stars for those campaigns.
Phil, who always tried to find humor in a situation and had a reason to laugh and make other people laugh will be deeply missed by his wife Catherine DeMatteis Giangardella whom he married May 13, 1950, three sons, Philip Giangardella of Niles, Michael Giangardella and his wife Myra of Howland, David Giangardella and his wife Linda of Niles, three brothers, Anthony Giangardella and his wife Alice of Lancaster, New York, Sam Giangardella and his wife Mary Helen of Niles, John Giangardella and his wife Joanna of San Clemente, California, three grandchildren, Amanda Giangardella, Monica Giangardella, Anne Giangardella, a brother-in-law Sam Montevideo of San Juan Capistrano, California, and a brother and sister-in law, Vincent and Thelma DeMatteis of Niles.
He was preceded in death by his beloved sisters, Grace Montevideo and Mary Giangardella.
Friends may call Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:30AM at The Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10AM Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles with Father John-Michael Lavelle officiating, preceded by a 9:30AM prayer service at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery where Philip will be honored for his military service by The Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard.
In Lieu of flowers, material contributions can be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles, 381 Robbins Ave, Niles, Ohio 44446. or a favorite charity of your choice.
Arrangements are being handled by The Joseph and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.
