Sam J. Salerno, 94, of Niles, died at 1:20AM Monday April 7, 2014 in Niles.
He was born March 26, 1920 in Niles the son of Umberto and Rose Gorglione Salerno.
Sam was a 1937 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, employed in the Civilian Conservation Corp, as a crane operator at Copperweld Steel, co-owned and operated Salerno's Service Station, and a Meter Reader for the City of Niles retiring in 1985.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles, The McDonalds Coffee Club, and enjoyed gardening.
His wife Antoinette "Toni" Salerno whom he married June 5, 1954 died March 7, 2008.
He will be deeply missed by four sons, Jim Salerno and his wife Stephanie of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Joe Salerno and his wife Kathy of Johnson, Vermont, Tom Salerno and his wife Beth of Fort Mill, South Carolina, and Michael Salerno and his wife Cindy of Durham, North Carolina, two daughters, Lori Joseph and her husband Mark of Niles and Betsy Salerno of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a brother Albert Salerno and his wife Marie of Davidson, North Carolina, a sister Anne DiGeronimo and her husband Vincent of Niles, nine grandchildren, Michael Joseph and his wife Rachel, Lindsey Lester and her husband Chance, Dana Salerno, Corey Salerno, Maria Salerno, Chris Salerno, Sam Salerno, Giulio Salerno, and Clare Salerno, and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Joseph .
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Salerno and Nicholas Salerno, and a sister Mary Corea.
Friends may call from 5 to 7PM Wednesday at The Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles where The Mount Carmel Bereavement Ministry will conduct prayers at 6:30PM.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10AM Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church with Fr. John-Michael Lavelle officiating, preceded by a 9:30AM prayer service at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
