Catherine “Kay” L. Giangardella, 95, of Niles, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2022, at Shepherd of The Valley Liberty, in the presence of her family. She was born June 9, 1926, in Warren, the daughter of Amedeo and Vera Vecchione DeMatteis.
Kay was a 1944 graduate of Niles McKinley High School and worked as a licensed beautician for several years before leaving the workforce to raise her children. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles.
Kay was happiest when in her kitchen making pizzas, bread, meatballs, and all of her Italian specialties. She especially loved hosting family dinner every Sunday, a tradition her family will continue to uphold and treasure. She cherished spending time with her granddaughters and teaching them her delicious recipes. Kay was a caring, loving person who will be deeply missed.
Her husband, Philip Giangardella, whom she married May 13, 1950, died August 4, 2013. They were married for 63 years.
Kay leaves behind three sons, Philip M. Giangardella of Niles, Michael Giangardella and his wife Myra of Howland, and David Giangardella and his wife Linda of Niles; three grandchildren, Amanda Giangardella and her husband Jeremy Bryant, Monica Frantz and her husband Dan, and Annie Giangardella; two great-grandsons, Luca and Leonardo; sister-in-law Mary Helen Giangardella; brother-in-law Anthony (Alice) Giangardella; brother-in-law John (Joanna) Giangardella; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving brother Vincent (Thelma) DeMatteis; sister-in-law Grace (Sam) Montevideo; brother-in-law Sam Giangardella; and sister-in-law Mary Giangardella.
Funeral services were private. Burial was in Niles City Cemetery.
