Concetta “Connie” Gioiello Lyell, 94, of Niles passed away Saturday, August 7, 2021 at The Suites at Continuing Healthcare of Niles.
She was born September 14, 1926 to Giuseppe and Pasqualina (Mauro) Gioiello.
Connie was a 1945 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, and a 1953 graduate of The Seton School of Nursing in Austin, Texas. Connie worked at various hospitals in the Mahoning Valley before spending 25 years as an industrial nurse at Republic (LTV) Steel, retiring in 1990.
On December 26, 1953, Connie married Robert J. Lyell of New Orleans, Louisiana, and shared more than 50 years of marriage with him before his passing in March of 2011. Together they raised three children, Margaret (James Slavin) Lyell of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Robert (Mary Kay) Lyell Jr. of Niles, Ohio; and Mary Frances Lyell of Santa Cruz, California.
Connie enjoyed traveling (especially to Italy), playing and working bingo, cheering on the Cleveland Indians, listening to polka music, visiting area casinos, being a part of The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society, and volunteering as a eucharistic minister and festival worker at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles, where she was a lifelong member. Above all else, however, Connie enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren, Katie (Joe) Fallo of Niles; Billy (Jessica) Lyell of Naples, Florida; Patrick Lyell of Cleveland, Ohio, and great-grandchildren Benjamin, Joseph, Susie, and Daniel... all of whom will remember their “Nonna” as a steadfast supporter and confidant.
In addition to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Connie leaves behind her sisters-in-law Bonnie Gioiello and Betty Gioiello, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins both locally, and in Naples, Italy.
Besides her husband and parents, Connie was preceded in death by her siblings, Carmen Gioiello, Neil Gioiello, and Amelia Datchuk.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Thursday, August 12, at 10:00AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles
Burial will be at All Souls Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and thanks to the amazing staff at The Suites at Continuing Healthcare of Niles who took care of Connie both during the pandemic, and in her final days.
