Loretta Salerno Obituary

Loretta M. Salerno, 100, of Niles passed away at 6:25PM Wednesday July 15, 2020 at Shepherd of The Valley Howland.
She was born January 7, 1920 in Niles the daughter of Henry and Theresa Bassett DeMathews.
Loretta was a 1937 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, and was employed at Lustig’s Shoe Store at The Eastwood Mall and Strauss Department Store in Downtown Youngstown.
Loretta was one of the oldest members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles and a church festival and school cafeteria volunteer. She was also a member of Niles Football Mothers, The Niles Library where she was an avid reader, Catholic Women’s Guild , Catholic Charities, Niles and Howland SCOPE, and numerous bridge clubs. She was also on The Niles Interfaith Committee where she served on The 100’th Anniversary Celebration of Mount Carmel Church.
Loretta was an avid bridge player, played in many tournaments, and even taught many people how to play. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling, and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events.
Her husband Frank Salerno whom she married January 12, 1944 died January 4, 2004.
She will be sadly missed by her son retired Colonel Dennis Salerno and his wife Patricia of Verona, Italy, her daughter Celeste Falter and her husband Randy of Niles, two grandchildren, Matthew Falter and his wife Kim and Kristi Vitelli and her husband Eric, and four great-grandchildren, Rebecca Calvin, Rachelle Calvin, Cameron Vitelli and Cailynn Vitelli.
She was preceded in death by an infant son Dennis Paul Salerno,a  brother Benjamin “Ace” DeMathews, and a niece Valerie DeMathews
Funeral services will be private.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery.
Her motto was “Live life to the fullest” and she did!
Arrangements are being handled by The Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.
