Neil Gioiello Obituary

Neil J. Gioiello, 89, of Niles passed away at 10:20AM Tuesday October 16, 2018 at his residence.

He was born September 3, 1929 in Niles the son of Guiseppi and Pasqualina (Mauro) Gioiello.

Neil was a 1947 graduate of Niles McKinley High School. After graduating Neil worked at The Steel Products in Niles and served in The United States Army during The Korean War from 1951-1953. While in the Army he served in Germany and got to travel to Italy where he visited his maternal grandmother for the first and only time.

He then went on to Youngstown College part time from 1953-1954 and then went full time to Nebraska State Teachers College in Wayne, Nebraska and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Education in 1957.

His first teaching jobs were in Lordstown in 1957 and in Mineral Ridge in 1959. In 1961 he started at The Youngstown City School Systems and got his Masters of Education Degree from Westminster College in Pennsylvania in 1966. He retired from The Youngstown City School System in 1989 after 32 years of teaching but substituted in grade schools for a few years after that.

On June 17, 1961, he married Betty J. Gerrity and they shared more then 57 wonderful years together. They have two sons born to this union.

Neil will be missed but never forgotten by his wife Betty (Gerrity) Gioiello, two sons, William (Danette) Gioiello of Tipp City, Ohio and Joseph (Sonia) Gioiello of Girard, seven grandchildren, Douglas, Matthew, Danya, and Madison Gioiello of Tipp City, Ohio and Triplets: Mario, Elena, and Jolena Gioiello of Girard, Ohio, and dear friends John and Dorothy DiPiero.

Other family members who will miss him include his sister Connie Lyell and sister-in-law Bonnie(Carmen) Gioiello, brother-in-law William(Judy) Gerrity, sister-in-law Suzanne Hayes, and several nieces and nephews. Being a friendly fellow, Neil was a “people person”. Everyone he met, he thought of as a “new friend” and will be missed by all of them.

Neil was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Carmen, a sister Amelia Datchuk, and a brother-in-law Kenny Hayes.

Neil enjoyed his family, especially 7 grandchildren, and he loved his church. He was an avid reader and loved doing word search puzzles. He loved to travel and has visited 13 other countries and most of The United States including Alaska and Hawaii.

Neil was a member of St. Pius X Church, which is now St. John Paul II Church in Warren where he and his family lived for 43 years. Neil was very active at his parish. He served as a lecturer, on Parish Council, as well as many other committees at the church. Neil also belonged to The Knights of Columbus but took a leave when he went to college. He also belonged to NEOTA, OTA, and the Local TCTA. He volunteered for Hospice, WCMA, and made many other commitments.
