Sylvia Pierina Merlo, 91, of Niles, passed away peacefully on Tuesday August 22, 2023, at Windsor House of Champion surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born July 24, 1932 in Cicala Calabria, Italy the daughter of Tommaso and Carmela Mancuso.
As a young woman Sylvia left Italy to become a Catholic missionary in South America. She came to the United States in the early 1960’s.
Sylvia was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles, festival volunteer, Blessed Mother Society, and Niles Knights of Columbus Council 1681 Ladies Auxiliary.
She was an avid gardener. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, baking, playing cards with her husband and friends, and spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her first husband Amelio Donatelli whom she married May 23, 1970 died March 6, 1980.
Her second husband Philip Merlo whom she married July 28, 1982 died June 17, 2010.
She will be deeply missed by her two daughters Mary Dull and her husband Terry of Niles and Nancy Rubino and her husband David of Niles, four grandchildren Anne Marie Setting and her husband Nick, Christine Morrison and her husband Patrick, Elizabeth Rubino, and Alexander Rubino, two great-grandchildren Liam and Connor Morrison and two sisters, Angelina and Severia
both of Italy.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters Concetta, Raffaela, and Filippina.
Friends may call Saturday from 9AM to 10AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Niles.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles.
Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
