Tindaro Calabrese Obituary

Tindaro Calabrese,99, of Niles passed away on Wednesday February 16, 2022 at Trumbull Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family.  

Tindaro was born October 10,1922 in Gioiosa Marea Sicily, Italy the son of Philipo and Parma Sidoiti Calabrese.  He grew up in the mountains of Sicily with his two sisters and a brother, his father  and his mother.  Tindaro was a veteran of the Italian military where he served his country in WWII. He met the love of his life, Maria Tindara, in Gioiosa Marea, and they married in 1942. 

In the mid 1960s Tindaro and his wife decided they wanted to immigrate to America.  During that time his wife immigrated first and then in 1967 Tindaro immigrated. Tindaro was employed at Cherry’s Top of the Mall and the Living Room. He retired from Cafe’ 422 in 1998 to care for his wife.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles. He enjoyed volunteering at the Mt. Carmel Festival wherever needed.  He enjoyed gardening, cooking, making bread, making wine, making sauce, and playing bocce with family and friends.Tindaro was such a good-hearted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. He had  an infectious laugh that made any conversation joyous.

He will be sadly missed by his daughter, Maria Calabrese Merlo of Niles, his step-daughter Carmela Villanti and her husband Gino of Niles,  10 grandchildren: Joseph Merlo and his wife Louise of Niles, Robert Merlo and his wife Jamie of Niles, Tino Merlo and his wife Michelle of Howland, Giovanne Merlo and his wife Monica of Niles,  Nick Panissidi and his wife Carol of Sparks, Nevada, Tina Keever of Fernley, Nevada, Lori Panissidi of Sparks, Nevada, Nick Villanti and his wife Sharon of Stow, Angelina Poffenbarger and her husband Teke of Bowling Green, Frank Villanti and his wife Melissa of Lakewood, and 23 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins in the U.S. and Sicily.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Maria Tindara Calabrese, two sisters: Antonina Calabrese and Santa Calabrese, a brother Giuseppe Calabrese, step-sons Rosario Panissidi and Mario Panissidi, and son-in-law Nunzio Merlo.

Friends may call Monday from 9:30AM to 10:30AM at The Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles. Due to the current health situation social distancing measures are expected to be observed and friends coming to pay their respects to the family are kindly asked to promptly depart the funeral home after doing so. Facial coverings are mandatory also.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11AM Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church where social distancing and facial covering are mandatory.

Burial will be in Pineview Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by The Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.
