Stephen V. Shader Sr. 90, of Niles, died 8:55PM Sunday November 23 at Hospice House in Poland. We lost another hero.

He was born in Allison, PA on July 8, 1924 the son of Vincent and Katherine Knapp Shader. 

Steve graduated from Brownsville High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. He was a radioman 2nd class aboard the U.S. Lindenwald and participated in the invasion of Kwajalien, Saipan, Emirau , Leyte, Lingayen and Okinawa  He was initiated by the Shellbacks into the Ancient Order of the Deep by crossing the equator, a feat he did multiple times. Steve later went on to Miami University in Oxford for radio training in the Navy.

He was employed at Copperweld Steel for four years and then Thomas Steel for three, before moving to California for three months and returning to the area to work at Alcan and Packard Electric where he retired in 1987.  
Steve was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Niles where he was a festival volunteer, San Filippo Neri Lodge in Niles, and always looked forward to helping at the Nutrition Center in Niles where he packed meals to go to other seniors. He enjoyed crafts, playing cards, sports and gardening. 

His wife Alice DiDomenico Shader, whom he married April 30, 1949, died December 20, 1990.

He will be deeply missed by three sons, Steven V. Shader Jr. of Myrtle Beach, SC., Michael Shader and his wife Sue of Cortland, James Shader and his wife Mary Kay of Niles, a daughter Katherine Bowers of Niles, his grandchildren Robbie Bowers, Justin, Megan and Lauren Rose Shader, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he is preceded in death by a brother Joseph Shader and two sisters Josephine Fealko and Mary Novak.

His family would like to thank the staff and residence of the Manor at Autumn Hills, the Hospice House for their end of life dignity, Dr. Alam, Dr. Thomas Jones Jr., Dr. Lori Hemrock and staff at Hope Center, Dr. Majaub’s office and also his friends at the Nutrition Site.


 Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles where the Mount Carmel bereavement ministry will conduct prayers at 6:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles preceded by 9:30 a.m. prayer service at the funeral home.
 Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
